Yangon Food Tour
After checking into the hotel, we had an appointment to go on a lunch time street food tour of the city with Yangon Food Tours. Our guide met us at the hotel and we set off on foot in for a tour around the neighborhood’s street food, stall, and small restaurant offerings.
At the first stop, we tried pork curry (wet tha hin) and steamed fish (gna pa lowt pown)
From there we walked to our next stop and tried the Burmese traditional noodle soup (Mohinga)-see the photo at top. Then more walking though various neighborhoods.
Below, shop owner giving alms to nuns; she received exactly two spoonfuls of uncooked rice and moved on to the next shop where she was given something else for her bowl.
At our next stop we tried Burmese-Chinese noodle soup or “chay oh” which was probably the best thing we ate on the tour. It was served with the noodles dry and the broth on the side. Plus the restaurant came with kittens!
On the way to the next stop…
Here, we tried Samosa soup or “Samusa thote“.
Final stop: Pennywort salad (myin kwah yuet thote), Pickled tea leaf salad (lah pet thote), traditional Burmese sweet snacks (ah cho bway) and Myanmar style Pan cake or (ban mote).
I wish I could give the tour a glowing review, but honestly, I can’t. I think it was the tour guide. He just didn’t seem all that interested in the food and that translated into an uninteresting tour. The food we tasted was good, but not knock-your-socks-off great.
The tour took about 2.5 hours and at the time cost 20,000 kyat per person for guide and food (it may have gone up a bit since). One of the things I did like was that the owner of the tour company sent a follow up email with the information on everything we tasted. But again, I think it all depends on the guide. Recent reviews are mostly glowing, so my guess is the guide we had is no longer with them.

Asian food looks so yummy. I would love to take this tour. How is called the dish from last picture?
